Wide streets are not safe streets. Wide streets equate to
faster
traffic.
People already drive fast enough to be dangerous. Wider turns with
multiple lanes are exponentially more dangerous. People feel safer on
narrow streets, where parked cars provide a buffer between the
pedestrians and the cars. Smart growth is not new - smart growth is a
principle people have used for thousands of years, only to abandon it
and then re-discover it. Want to know more? Read Suburban Nation, by
Andres Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Jeff Speck.
A couple from Portland, Maine, wrote to tell us that they "...highly
recommend Kate Atkinson's "Case Histories," an absolutely brilliant
new thriller. Three terrible incidents, separated by time
and characters, are laid out, then ever so neatly tied together in a
story that is alternately hilarious and horrifying, but always well
told." They also wished to let you know, "And if you haven't read it,
we were also enthralled by Tom Reiss' "The Orientalist", the
remarkable life story of a Russian-born Jew who posed as an Arab in
pre-Hitler Berlin. If you think today's world is a violent mess, wait
'till you read about the one inhabited by Essad Bey (aka Lev
Nussimbaum)"

Dressed for Death - by Donna Leon - A well-written and
interesting mystery set in Venice and about the Venetians and Italy.
When Elephants Dance - Tess Holthe - The situation of the Filipinos
at the end of WWII, caught between the American army and the
Japanese. Told through family stories which illustrate the different
element of Filipino society. A good look at guerrilla war,
occupation, World War Two, and the strength of family ties.

Bird By Bird - Anne Lamott - A favorite author of BookPeople
customers. Bird By Bird is a funny, insightful look at the process of
writing, using Lamott's use of stories of her life to illustrate
writing points. A cheerful and relaxing book. Paperback.
