Greetings, Readers!

We've got a lot of new events for you this week, so I'll just get right down to business. There's tons of stuff coming up in the next few days, so look closely!

National Library Week is coming! This year, it's April 14th through 18th. There's a ton of events to attend, but they're easy to remember! All events take place on the first floor of the University of Idaho Library. Come enjoy the great literature, free refreshments, celebrate the university, and of course, support fellow Vandals as they read their own works!

Why Should We Care? Well, on the topic of Burma, journalist Emma Larkin can tell you! Come find out why Wednesday, April 16th at 7:30pm at the Silverthorne Theatre at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston. Presented by the LCSC Division of Humanities, and made possible through a generous donation by the Rosehill Estate.

Beyond the Emerald City: History and an Ethic of Place. The Emerald City is, of course, Seattle! And that bolded bit is the title of a lecture to be presented by Dr. Matthew Klingle at WSU. The event is Wednesday, April 16th at 4:00pm in the Center for Undergraduate Education, room 202. The event is free and open to the public, so if you like Seattle as much as I do, you should go and check it out!

Get Lit, this April 16th through 20th! That's right, the 10th Annual Get Lit literary festival is coming to Spokane this month! Featuring an excellent and diverse pool of authors, including Diana Abu-Jaber, David James Duncan, Dorianne Laux, Thomas Lynch, Carole Lexa Schaffer, David Wojahn, Naomi Wolf, and Tobias Wolff. Seussical! The Meussical! Well, musical, really, but you get the idea! Dr. Seuss, beloved the world over, is coming from the page to the stage! Show times are: 7:30pm on April 17th, 18th, and 19th. There's also a special matinee showing at 2:30pm on the 19th. Tickets are $12 for adults in advance, or $15 at the door; $8 for Children 12 and under, or $10 at the door. April 17th is Poem In Your Pocket Day. Have a favorite poem? Carry it around with you on April 25th of this year, and share it with others you may meet. Poetry is a vital part of any culture, and to be perfectly honest, Americans need to appreciate it more! Help them out by helping them to appreciate a favorite verse of yours. Share the love - spread Poetry!

Anna Brewer, the cartoonist from the Moscow Co-Op Community Newsletter, is having an art show, featuring Palouse landscapes, oil paintings, watercolors, and cartoons. It will be at Columbia Tractor, the John Deere dealership located at 1906 S. Main St in Moscow. There will be an opening party this Friday, April 18th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. The show will stay up until June 11th. Columbia Tractor's business hours are Monday through Friday 7:30am to 5:00pm, and Saturday 7:30am until 12:00 noon.

Buddy Levey, Andrea Mason, Peter Chilson, and Debbie Lee will be having a group reading at the Cafe Silos. The event is Friday, April 18th from 6:00 - 7:30pm. The Cafe Silos are located at 693 Styner Ave in Moscow, Id. For more information, email deblee@wsu.edu

Haiti Night is Friday, April 18th, from 6:30pm - 9:00pm! Come meet Afelene Rosemond, who will lead an evening of songs, slides, and skits that will introduce you to her home on the island of LaGonave, off the coast of Haite. Afelene is a teacher and human rights activist visiting Moscow to explore collaborations between her community and ours. She belongs to a women's group that uses popular theater to promote social change. The event will take place at the Unitarian Church of the Palouse, at 420 E. 2nd Street in Moscow.

Dr. Thomas Barfield will be giving a FREE lecture, entitled Afghanistan - New Trouble in the Land of the Hindu Kush. It will take place Friday, April 18th at 2:30pm in Todd 130 on the Washington State University campus. The event, sponsored by the Anthropology Graduate Organization, is free and open to the public!

The Palouse Studio Potters Guild invites you to come eat lunch with them! The event is Saturday, April 19th from 11:00am - 1:00pm at the 1912 Center at 206 E. 3rd St in Moscow. Come anytime between 11:00 and 1:00. Minimum donation is $15 per bowl, which gets you an empty bowl to fill with soup and bread. The bowl is yours to keep, as a reminder that there are always empty bowls to fill. Empty Bowls is a grassroots fundraising effort, raising money to feed the hungry. This year, the proceeds will go to the Kooskia food bank, and Oxfam International. The Moscow Food Co-Op will donate the soup and bread, and bowls were created and donated by the Palouse Studio Potters Guild, Wendt Pottery of Lewiston, Clay Arts Guild of North Idaho, and Washington State University's ceramics students.

Want to hear some good old-fashioned barbershop harmony? The Palouse Harmony Chorus is hosting a barbershop song-fest, featuring International Quartet Champions Friendly Advice, Moscow High School's own Bearitones, and a parade of men's choruses from all over the Inland Empire. The event is Saturday, April 19th at 7:00pm, and takes place at the Moscow High School Auditorium, 301 E. 3rd. Tickets are available from BookPeople of Moscow, Hodgins Drugs, Sears at Eastgate, Cowgirl Chocolates, Rosauers, and Neill's Flowers and Gifts in Pullman.

Come on down to the Socrates Cafe, an event at BookPeople! When was the last time you could discuss your thoughts openly and honestly with others? Have you ever questioned society and its assumptions, or your own? Do you like to have a good discussion without fear of being attacked for having an opinion that is different? Then Socrates Cafe is here for you! The time is 6:00pm, and the Cafe will meet every first and third Sunday of the month. Future meetings: April 20th, May 4th, May 18th, June 1st, June 15th, July 6th, July 20th. For more information, find them on the web at www.philosopher.org.

Buy Local Moscow is having an event, a Spring Thing if you will, Thursday, April 24th at the 1912 Center in Moscow. The event will run from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and will feature displays and giveaways from thirty-five Moscow businesses, as well as samples of food from local restaurants and live music. Admission is free, and raffle tickets for prizes from local businesses are only a dollar! Come check it out, Readers, because it's going to be awesome!

The Village Bicycle Project will be holding its annual spring event this year on Saturday, April 26th at 3:00pm on the Tower Lawn at the University of Idaho. Events will include races, trick riding demonstrations, a bike show, and much more! The event will be held alongside the annual Earth Week celebrations, including a barbeque and a concert in the evening.

The Mirror Theater presents Shakespeare Sundays! You, the audience, will do the acting for these performances. Come sign in at 1:15 for the part you're dying to play. No preference is given for race, gender, or age, and scripts are provided! If you're musically inclined, then come accompany the acts on your instrument of choice! The last remaining play is The Tempest which will be performed on May 4th and 18th.  A two-dollar contribution is required to participate. The plays will be based on the Oxford Shakespeare, second edition, but as noted above, scripts will be provided! For more information, visit www.MirrorTheater.org!

Oldways - Traditional, Low-Tech, People-Power! Come learn how things were done in the good old days! You'll have so much fun, you'll finally come to understand why people always call them "the good old days". The events take place from May 9th through 11th in Santa, Idaho. Here are the available workshops:
Woodland Crafts - From forest to finished product using hand tools. Making quick sawhorse, axe use, peevee, bucksaw, crosscutting, and more!
Tool Sharpening - Techniques for sharpening all kinds of tools; bring some things of your own to work on!
Fiber Processing - From fiber to spun thread or cordage. Linen, hemp, and wool, using drop spinning and spinning wheels.
Systems - Learn more about 12-volt and solar electricity, grey- and rain water reclamation, compost, and convection hot water. Everything you need to know about everything you need to stay comfortable!
Field Trip! - Take a tour of a local oganic farm, learn about wood stove use, cooking skills, basket-making, mouse-catching, mole-trapping, treadle sewing machines, and much much more!

Do you like books? Ever wanted to make one the old-fashioned way? The way the professionals of yesteryear did? Then we have some great news for you! Jim Croft of Oldways is hosting some classes on bookmaking! And let us tell you, Jim Croft knows his bookmaking; he's one of the very best! The classes:
Wooden Boards and Clasps - June 6th through 16th - Wherein you make two books, 9 days total.
Tool Intensive - June 24th through 25th - Wherein you learn all about making tools, knives, bones, awls, scrapers and more.
Or, for those of you who want to know everything there is to know:
Oldways of Making Books from Raw Materials - June 26th through July 11th. This gets you everything: tool making and sharpening, lessons on fibers hempen and flaxen, traditional hand papermaking and loft-drying, gelatin sizing and burnishing, and making a book with wooden boards and clasps.

This Fall, the University of Idaho will be offering Nez Perce Language classes. Ever wanted to learn Nez Perce? Here's your chance! The class is open to all UI students, and both first- and second- year levels are offered. Landscapes, the literary and arts journal of WSU, is coming out soon! The Spring 2008 edition will feature even more of the best student works in art, photography, fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Keep an eye out!
