Greetings, Readers!
I have an important correction to make from last week.
Mary Matsuda Gruenewald's reading is at the 1912 center, NOT at BookPeople.
Please adjust your plans accordingly. Rest assured, it is still guaranteed
to be enormously insightful!
BookPeople is currently selling tickets for: The 11th
Hour. BookPeople is also currently selling adorable little plaster dogs!
More specifically, they are fine pieces of art, hand-crafted by a young
Idaho artist, Sara Spink, and are being sold to fund her trip to graduate
school. The good Miss. Spink was born and raised in Boise, went to school at
Evergreen, and is currently making these dogs (which are very charming) to
fund her further studies in art and animation. The prices are quite
reasonable, ranging from $16 to 30, and the cause is good. If you know any
dog-lovers or art-lovers, these would be a perfect gift. As an aside, she
also would be happy to make a sculpture of your own dog; all she needs is a
good photo. If you are interested in getting a personalized sculpture made,
contact me personally at mrweatherford@vandals.uidaho.edu, and I will put
you in touch with her.
It's less than a month until Wordstock! That's right -
the largest book and literary festival in the Northwest, with nine stages,
185 writers, 150 exhibit booths, 17 workshops for writers, 32 workshops for
teachers, a special children's activity area, and so much more we can't list
it all here, is almost here. There's so much information, in fact, that it
would dwarf even our substantial newsletter. So I give you their website:
www.wordstockfestival.com - go check it out if you're interested!
Thursday, October 25th - Bookperson Berit will interview
Scott Onak, a MFA student at the University of Idaho. Mr. Onak will talk
about short story writing, among other things. The interview is part of our
radio show, which Berit runs, called Happy to Be Here. It is on KRFP Radio
Free Moscow, 92.5 FM, and runs from 12:00-2:00pm.
Have you ever wondered what, exactly, the deal is with
Mary Magdalene? Well I'm afraid that I can't tell you that, but happily
enough, I know someone who can! That someone is Dr. Sharon Kehoe, a profound
and gifted scholar. Dr. Kehoe will share slides and photographs from the
south of France, and talk about Mary Magdalene and the French Connection.
She argues that the French saw Mary as an evangelist who spread Christianity
to Province, and will show photographic evidence taken from the churches of
the area. The event takes place Thursday, October 25th at 12:10pm in the
Bundy Reading Room of Avery Hall at WSU.
Thursday, October 25th, 7:00pm - Mary Matsuda Gruenewald,
author of "Looking Like the Enemy", will read at the 1912 Center. Her books
are in, and we're really excited for the event! It is part of a larger
event, the "Palouse Asian-American Potluck and Lecture." Bring a dish and
enjoy! Remember, she will be reading at the 1912 Center in downtown Moscow,
and not at BookPeople as I previously suggested.
Saturday, October 27th, from 11:00am - 1:00pm - Paul
Brians, professor of English at WSU and author of "Common Errors in English
Usage" (an excellent book (and calendar), which I enjoy immensely), will
give an informal how-to lecture, geared towards teaching new authors how to
take their work from the web to the printed page.
Saturday, October 27th, from 1:00pm - 3:00pm - Mathew
Hall, author of "Outside on the Palouse", will be at BookPeople, signing
copies of his book and talking about the great and exciting outdoors of the
Palouse. Don't miss out on this chance to broaden your horizons!
Saturday, October 27th - Steptoe, the celebrated
bluegrass band, will be having a CD Release Party at the One World Cafe! The
event will start at 7:00pm, and that's at One World Cafe in Moscow, at the
corner of 6th and Main.
How in the heck do you act Shakespeare? Find out from the
Mirror Theater, now offering Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced Master
classes. Beginners classes start on Monday, October 29th, with Intermediate
and Advanced classes starting in 2008. For more information about the
theater, visit their website at www.MirrorTheater.org or email them at
Inquiry@MirrorTheater.org Mark your calendars!
The International Fair Trade Craft Sale is coming soon!
It will be held on November 2nd, from 4-9pm, and November 3rd from 9am-5pm.
The event takes place at the Community Congregational United Church of
Christ, located at 525 NE Campus Ave, in Pullman, WA. It's just four blocks
down from the Bookie, if that helps! There will be not only free admission,
but free parking as well! You've no excuse NOT to go see what it's all
about, and just think of all the Christmas shopping you'll be able to
finish!
The 11th Hour will be playing at the Kenworthy Performing
Arts Center on November 5th, at 7:00pm. The 11th Hour is a film about Global
Warming, and our possible roles in preventing it. It is narrated by Leonardo
DiCaprio, and contains contributions by Stephen Hawkings and Mikhail
Gorbachov, among many others. The 11th Hour discusses what has happened with
regard to the environment, and what we can do about it. A must-see film,
check it out! Presented by the Moscow Civic Association, tickets are
available at BookPeople.
Curious about Graphic Novels? I bet you are! Well we've
got just the thing for you! The illustrious Dr. Walter Hesford of the
University of Idaho English Department will be hosting a discussion of
Jewish Themes in Graphic Novels. The events will be on the second floor of
the University of Idaho library. All sessions are free and open to the
public, and everyone is encouraged to attend. The events and books are as
follows: Thursday, November 8th, 7pm: The Quitter, by Harvy Pekar Thursday,
November 29th, 7pm: The Rabbi's Cat by Joann Sfar. Again, everyone is
welcome and encouraged to attend, and if you'd like to read the books, we
will have them at BookPeople shortly! For more information, contact Ben at
885-5858.
Are you sorry that there's less Daylight to be had as we
move in to the darker winter months? Well we've got something to cheer you
up! Goodbye Daylight 2007! An evening of live music with Steptoe, Zugunrue,
and Barewires! How could you possibly resist? I don't know either. Tickets
are available at Bookpeople for $10, or at the door for $10.50
The University of Idaho and Washington State University
are both hosting some (very) distinguished visiting writers this fall
semester! The University of Idaho will host Patricia Hampl on November 14th
and Ann Pancake in March of next year. The readings will all be at 7:30pm,
on their respective days, in the University of Idaho Law Building Courtroom.
BookPeople will, of course, be present at all three events with plenty of
books for sale, and we will also have their books for sale in the store
before the events.
Washington State University will be hosting Peter Chilson
on November 8th. The reading will be at the WSU Museum of Art, at 7:00pm. We
have copies of his book in stock, so come pick one up!
The Mirror Theater presents Shakespeare Sundays! You, the
audience, will do the acting for these performances. Come sign in at 1:15
for the part you're dying to play. No preference is given for race, gender,
or age, and scripts are provided! If you're musically inclined, then come
accompany the acts on your instrument of choice! The schedule: Romeo and
Juliet: October 14th and 28th The Merchant of Venice: December 2nd and 16th
Henry the Fourth, Part I: January 13th and 27th Hamlet: February 10th, 24th

second edition, but as noted above, scripts will be provided! For more

The Family Series is returning to Beasley Coliseum at WSU
for a 6th year! These family-oriented productions are perfect for fun-loving
parents and kids, and are a steal at only $6 for adult tickets and $4 for
kids under 13. The events this year are: Babes in Toyland, by the American
Family Theatre, Wednesday, December 12th - 7:00pm Mad Science presents
"Newton's Revenge" Monday, February 11th (2008) - 7:00pm Fred Garbo's
Inflatable Theater Monday, April 7th (2008) - 7:00pm How do you feel about
Yodeling? If you're anything like Wylie Gustafson, LeAnn Rimes, Shakira, or
Taylore Ware (America's Yodeling Sweetheart!), then you probably feel pretty
good about it indeed! Gustafson supplied the yodel for the iconic 'Yahoo'
commercial, and has a new book out, called How to Yodel: Lessons to Tickle
Your Tonsels. We will, of course, be carrying this book, and we encourage
you to come by and check it out. A list of places not to yodel is included
with the book, but we promise that BookPeople is not such a place.
Yodeling is welcome here!
Yodel-ay-ee-oo!
