In past years, Moscow has enjoyed productions of Eve
Ensler's "Vagina Monologues." The "Monologues" have been breaking censorship
barriers and promoting a global conversation on women and their bodies. At
the 2006 Simmons College of Library Science commencement, Ensler emphasized
that the production's donation to fight violence against women--$30
million--was greater than the amount distributed by the UN. This last year
the production has been brought to a new audience. According to The New York
Times, Lina Khoury advocated producing "Monologues" in Lebanon. Resolute,
Khoury pursued the production through state censors and an appeals court
before her wish was granted. Khoury's version blended three local monologues
with the original version. The production had such overwhelming success that
its run was extended two months. In celebration of Moscow's legacy of
production and in comradery with Ensler's desire to turn politics away from
insatiable power hunger, BookPeople would like to announce that Pullman will
be hosting "The Vagina Monologues" this Friday at 8pm on the WSU campus in
the Daggy Theater. We would also like to announce the release of Ensler's
new book, "Insecure at Last," an interesting commentary on America's
obsession with security.
