Evening Folks,

Beginning yesterday, WSU's English Club began sponsoring a book drive to help replace the library of Sacajawea Middle School in Spokane. Last month the library's prized collection was the victim of arson. The drive will run October 9th until the 27th. However, cash donations will be accepted until November 1. If you have any questions or would like to make a contribution contact Jessica Strickland jessiegirl_03@msn.com or Todd Butler butlert@wsu.edu or come into Bookpeople.

Looking to join a writing group or to build a community with writers? Moscow has such a community and is trying to harvest an environment of literary creativity. If you are interested contact Judy Sobeloff at freewriting@turbonet.com or Diane Baumgart at baumgart@moscow.com.

Wednesday, October 11th, Natasha Tretheway will read poetry at the Kenworthy Theatre at 7:30pm. Tretheway's poetry collections explore daily life as experienced by those who did not, historically, have a voice. In her most recent collection, "Native Guard," centers around her childhood in Mississippi at a time when her parents' interracial marriage was illegal. The title poem depicts a former slave stationed at Fort Massachusetts and, as she imagines his life, draws a parallel with her own life and the crucial role of memory in history and individual identity.

On Wednesday, October 11th, the Quarterly Regional Breakfast Meeting will begin at 7:00 AM at the Hilltop Restaurant in Pullman. The topic is "The Importance of Air and Ground Transportation," and the speakers will be Robb Parish, Moscow-Pullman Airport Manager, and Peg Motley, Wheatland Express owner. Contact Michol Ann at 338-3208 or micholann.jensen@pullman-wa.gov

Friday the 13th will bring the last edition of Lemony Snicket's "Series of Unfortunate Events." Be sure to catch a copy. For those not familiar with the series, it is a wonderful read for the young and the young of heart.

The Premiere of "A Palouse Paradise" featuring Bruce Reichart will be Tuesday, October 17 from 7 until 8pm. This event is free but one needs to reserve a seat. To make reservations or for more information call 885-1226 or 1-800-424-1226.

The Auditorium Chamber Music Series present Onyx Brass Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 7:30pm. You can purchase tickets at BookPeople or at www.auditoriumchambermusic.org.

Also, set Friday, November 3rd aside. William Kittredge will be here at BookPeople! He will read from his new novel, "The Willow Field," and be available for signing. Do not miss this one!

Artists and Performers wanted: An event to be held on the U of I campus entitled "The F-Word Live" is currently accepting submissions around the theme; what is your vision of feminism? It is an open forum performance and artistic display so creativity is welcome. For more information visit flame@stuorgs.uidaho.edu. Submissions are due by October 30th.

For anyone interested in the concept of a Western identity, "Owning it all," by Kittredge, is a must read. Kittredge was born at a time when traditional, land-grabbing manifest destiny was giving way to lack of land and environmental misuse. "Owning it all" explores the foundation of the western mindset, what the implications are for the land and the people, and what might come next. Despite its age (first published in 1987), "Owning it all" raises fascinating ideas and interesting issues for those of us who identify with the West, in concept or physical reality.

Cheers,

Book People of Moscow
