Greetings and Salutations, Readers! Book People of Moscow
is proud to be featured as a Cafe and Bookstore on Delocator! If you're not
sure what we're talking about, Readers, check them out at http://delocator.net/index.php.
Delocator is a website that helps you find cafes, book shops, and movie
theatres near you. Specifically, they help you find the best of these places
- the small, friendly, independently-owned stores you cherish! Check them
out, use them to help plan your vacation, or even help them grow by adding
your own favorite stores!
Readers, some of you may know or know of Paul
Brians. Last year, we ran a few paragraphs about his Common Errors in
English Usage book and calendar. What you may not know is that, in addition
to being an author, gentleman, and all-around excellent fellow, he also
collects Disney Comics from around the world! And, during the month of
August, you have the chance to see them! Selections from Brians' collection
will be on display in the Neill Public Library, complete with background
information for your perusal! Be sure to stop by and check it out! The
display is located just inside the library entrance.
Last reminder, Readers! The annual Bike, Ride, & Star
Gazing Event is coming up Friday, August 11th at 9:00pm. The plan for this
year is to ride Paradise Path from Berman Creekside Park to the UI
Observatory to watch the Perseid meteor showers under the full moon. Bring
your safety equipment! And remember, bicycle lights and reflectors are
required to participate. For more information, call Roger Blanchard at
883-7098.
Auditions are coming up in a few days for
Cow-Tipping and Other Signs of Stress, a full-length play and a twisted
romantic comedy by Gregory Fletcher. Don't miss your chance to take part in
the World Premiere of this exciting new play, the winner of the 2005 Mark
Twain Prize for comic playwriting. If you would like to be a part of this
production, please make an appointment with Pam Palmer by calling
208-596-2270, or by email at ppalmer@moscow.com. The auditions will be held
Monday, August 14th at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre from 6:00 to
8:00pm.
Now Available at Book People of Moscow - Tickets for the
WORLD PREMIERE of Chris Barber's Love Sick. It is showing one night only,
Tuesday, August 15th, at 7:00 and 9:00pm. This film has been a long time in
the making, and is a genuine labor of love, Readers - I think it would be
well worth your time to check it out! I won't get a chance to remind you
again before showtime, sadly, but please be sure to go see what it's all
about! You won't be disappointed!
We also have, for your perusal, an excellent writeup
about the MCCWW, submitted by Alert Reader Judy: "Attention, writers of all
stripes! If you'd enjoy being part of a group experimenting with fiction,
poetry, non-fiction, personal essay, and journal writing, the Moscow
Community Creative Writing Workshop may be for you. Taught by eight local
writers, the workshop will meet for nine Wednesday nights at the Moscow
Public Library and elsewhere in Moscow, September 20 through November 15
from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Writers of all levels, from beginning to advanced,
are welcome! Workshop participants will have the opportunity to receive
feedback on their writing, to complete a piece to be compiled in a workshop
anthology, and to read their work on local radio station KRFP and at a
public reading with workshop instructors at BookPeople on November 15.
Workshop instructors and topics are as follows: Mary Clearman Blew ("Writing
From Personal Documents--Letters, Photos, Diaries"); Peter Chilson
("Crossing Literary Borders: What Fiction and Nonfiction Teach Us About
Story-telling"); Paula Coomer ("Place as Character"); Aimee Phan and Matt
Shears ("Writing the Prose Poem and Short Short Fiction"); Judy Sobeloff
("Writing the Top of Your Head Off"); Georgia Tiffany ("Finding the
Pharoah's Eye: Using Journaling as a Springboard"); and Pamela Yenser ("Déjà
Vu Description: Sensory Images in Multiple Genres"). The workshop will be
limited to 15 participants. To apply, write M.C.C.W.W. a one to two-page
double-spaced letter describing yourself and your interest in writing, using
one fictional detail. Drop off two copies (one with name, address, email,
and phone number in the top right corner and one anonymous copy), plus a
SASE, at the reference desk of the Moscow Library between August 15 and
September 7. Please do not include identifying information on the outer
envelope. Notification of acceptance by September 14. To sustain our ability
to offer this workshop, suggested donations of $24-$40 ($3-$5 per session)
are welcomed, plus an optional $12 materials fee for participant anthology.
No one will be turned away for lack of funds. For more information, see
www.latahlibrary.org, pick up a flyer at the library reference desk, or
email mccwww2006@turbonet.com. M.C.C.W.W. is presented with the support of
the Western States Arts Federation, the Idaho Commission on the Arts, and
the Latah County Arts and Culture Committee. M.C.C.W.W. prohibits
discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex,
disability, or age." That's all for now, Readers! Thanks for Reading, and
take care!
